Registration Basics:

Do I have to pay to use the site?
There is no subscription charge to use this site, except for any paid content areas.

Why should I register?
So you can have full access to all stories and exclusive Web-only features.

How do I register?
Just fill out our registration form. You will be asked basic questions to establish your login, as well as additional information to help us get to know you.

Why are you asking for this personal information?
Two primary reasons: If we know more about the people using our site and how they use it, we can tailor our content to meet more people's needs. Also, we can offer the site for free because it is advertiser-supported. But advertisers, rightfully so, need to know as much as they can about the people viewing their messages. Up to this time, we did not know much about our users. Advertisers will be able to reach a more targeted audience, and users will receive more relevant advertising and editorial content.

Are there any parts of the site that do not require registration?
Yes. Any area, such as the home page or main section pages,  that doesn't require you to login is freely available.

I have registered for other services and features. Will I need to register again?
Yes and No. Eventually we will have one registration for all services so that once you create an account, it can be used to access any of our services and features.  However, services, such as Bulletin Boards, may require additional registration.

I use a shared computer. Should we all register separately?
Yes, you can, thereby saving your preferences. Of course, you will have to log out after each visit and log back in when you return.

I use a computer at work and at home. Do I need to register on each computer?
No. You have just one account and you can use it on any computer.

Can I access my newspaper subscription account?
At this time, no.

Managing Your Account:

After registering, how can I log in?
Go to the Login page. From there, enter your username and password. If your computer is set to accept cookies, you will not have to log in again, unless you have logged out.

I registered and was able to get into the site, but when I came back days later to access the site, I couldn't get in. Why?
You may have been deactivated. Immediately after registering, the system sends you a validation email, which requires you to click a link within a specified validation period (usually 72 hours) verifying your email address.  If you don't respond within the period noted in the validation email, the system automatically deactivates you.

How do I reactivate my account?
Users who have validated their email addresses may be manually deactivated at any time.  These Deactivated users with valid email addresses can go to the site and reactivate their own accounts.

To reactivate your account: Log-in to the site. Click on the "Reactivate Account" link. The Account Reactivation window displays. Click on the Submit Query button, and a "Thank you for reactivating" message displays. You now have full access to the site.

Users who have not validated their email addresses are automatically deactivated.  These Deactivated users with invalid email addresses must first validate their email addresses before they can reactivate their accounts.  Therefore, you must log-in to the site, click on the "Reactivate Account" link, where you will view an Email Validation Required page.  Verify the correct email address is displaying in the field, or change it, and then click on the Send Validation Email to Address Above button.  You will receive a validation email you must click on the link within the time specified. Once you have validated, you may follow the instructions above to reactivate your account.

What should I do if I forget my password?
You have two choices: 1) You can access the hint you created at registration to help you remember your password; or 2) You can reset your password.

To access your password hint:  Click on the "Forgot Your Password?" link, and the Password Hint window opens. Enter your username and click on the Show Hint button.  Your password hint displays.  If this does not jog your memory, then your password can be reset.

To reset your password:  Click on the "Reset Password" link, and the Reset Password window opens. Enter your username and click on the Reset Password button.  An email is sent to you with your new system-generated password.

Are passwords and usernames case sensitive?
Passwords are case sensitive. Usernames are not.

If I need to change my e-mail address or password, how do I do that?
You can change all of your information from your account page, just use the "Edit Account" link on any page found near your username.  All users can access the account management area, even if their access to view  the site has been removed.

To change your e-mail address: Click on the "Edit Account" link  The Edit Account window displays. Change the email address and click on the Modify Account button. The window refreshes and a "SUCCESS Account successfully modified" message displays at the top of the window.  A validation email is sent requiring you to verify your email address within the validation period.

To change your password: Click on the "Edit Account" link  The Edit Account window displays. Click on the "Change Password" link. The Change Password page then displays.  Enter your old, new, and confirmation password.  Click on the Change Password button, and you will be asked to login with your new password.  Once you login, you will also be asked if you wish to store your new password in the system, click Yes.  You are then redirected to the Edit Account page.

Note: To easily retrieve your password, you can also change the Hint field to reflect your new password.

I no longer want an account; how do I deactivate it?
Deactivation removes your access to protected content only.  You can always view non-protected content and reactivate your account to access protected content at any time. To deactivate your account, you can request that your account be deactivated or you can go to the site and deactivate your own account.

To deactivate your account: Log-in to the site. Click on the "Deactivate Account" link. The Account Deactivation window displays. Click on the Continue button, and a Deactivation success email is sent to you with a link allowing you to access the system and reactivate your account at any time. Log out of the site.

What should I do if I'm having trouble registering?
If you can't find the answer in this document, submit a Registration Problem Report.

To submit a Problem Report: Click on the Problem Report link.  The Report a Problem window displays. Enter your name and specific problem. If you wish further contact, click on the Yes button and enter your email address. Click on the Submit button, and your email is sent to a site representative who will respond to your problem.
